New Building at the Old Town School

January 22nd, 2012 by brian
Respond

The Old Town School of Folk Music, one of my favorite Chicago institutions, is celebrating it’s 55th birthday!  This coincides with the opening of their brand-new building across the street from the existing Lincoln Square location.  As part of the celebration, they are having 55 days of events for the public.

Check out the whole 55 Days schedule here.  Many of the events are free.

We get to help wish the Old Town School a happy birthday by playing a short set there on Day 54, March 2nd, 6pm.  There will also be sample classes, dancing, and open jam sessions.  It should be a fun night.

Changes

The band was sad to learn that our friend Neil Lifton passed away earlier this week.  He was the owner of Duke’s Bar in Roger’s Park, which had always been one of our favorite places to play.  My favorite memory of Neil was the time he jumped in and sang Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen with us during a show when our normal vocalist was out.

He will definitely be missed.

UPDATE:  There will be memorial for Neil on January 21st at the Lifeline Theatre.

We’re headed back to open another Bluegrass Legends concert since we had such a fun time last year. This concert series consistently brings in some of the best bluegrass bands in the country, and we’re excited to be part of it.

This year we’re opening for the Larry Stephenson Band. It should be an excellent night of music. Get your tickets here.

We hope to see you there!

You have a couple of opportunities to see us live this summer.   The first is this Sunday as part of Around The World in Eighty Hours, in conjunction with the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival.  The bill for Around the World in Eighty Hours includes Spanish, Hawaiian, Irish, Indian, and Georgian music, so it should be a fund day.

Downtown Seder and New Duke’s Show

We had a delightful time at the Downtown Seder–the food was excellent, our song about hiding the afikomen was well received, and we heard tons of amazing musicians.  Our thanks go out to the City Winery*, KFAR, and the other sponsors for having us participate!

As a reminder, we have a gig coming up on April 24th.

* City Winery is coming to Chicago!  If it’s anything like the New York location, it will be a welcome addition to the Loop.

Downtown Seder

The Downtown Seder–an annual tradition in New York–is coming to Chicago!  We’re excited to be joining many great entertainers, bands (including the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band!), and politicians in this event.  All proceeds will benefit the Chicago Food Bank and the Ark.

And don’t forget, we’ll be playing Duke’s on April 24th!
