Our band met in a klezmer class at the Old Town School of Folk Music, an institution that is a wonderful resource for Chicagoans.
I’ve been taking classes there for years. Here’s what keeps me coming back:
- The teachers are world-class. I’m always amazed at the level of talent there.
- The atmosphere is friendly. Learning a new skill can be nerve-wracking, but the Old Town School community is welcoming and encouraging, making it easy to learn.
- They teach a wide variety of musical styles. Don’t be deceived by the word “folk” in the title. Classes also cover rock, jazz, bluegrass, country music, world music, and dozens of others. They teach dance, too!
- They teach ensemble playing. Once you’ve progressed at learning an instrument, you can join ensembles to learn to play with other musicians.
They are starting a new session of classes next week, so now is a good time to register!
