Our band met in a klezmer class at the Old Town School of Folk Music, an institution that is a wonderful resource for Chicagoans.

I’ve been taking classes there for years. Here’s what keeps me coming back:

  • The teachers are world-class. I’m always amazed at the level of talent there.
  • The atmosphere is friendly. Learning a new skill can be nerve-wracking, but the Old Town School community is welcoming and encouraging, making it easy to learn.
  • They teach a wide variety of musical styles. Don’t be deceived by the word “folk” in the title.  Classes also cover rock, jazz, bluegrass,  country music, world music, and dozens of others.  They teach dance, too!
  • They teach ensemble playing. Once you’ve progressed at learning an instrument, you can join ensembles to learn to play with other musicians.

They are starting a new session of classes next week, so now is a good time to register!

p.s.  — We have a show tomorrow at Bill’s Blues.  Come hear the results of an Old Town School education!

Thursday, October 22
Bill’s Blues
1029 Davis St, Evanston, IL
7pm

The ChickenFat Klezmer Orchestra believes in using the smallest vehicle that your instrument will allow.   If you play a clarinet, take a bicycle to practice.

But if you play an upright bass, you do this:

Smart Car with Upright Bass (it’s hard to see, but that’s a double bass sticking out of the top of a convertible Smart Car.)

While I’m on the subject, don’t forget to hop in the smallest vehicle you can and come see us play at Silvie’s Lounge tomorrow night (October 10) at 9pm!

This Saturday ChickenFat will be playing (as a quintet) at “Put the Garden to Bed,” a benefit for NeighborSpace. NeighborSpace is
